“Pussy willow is a name given to many of the smaller species of the genus Salix when their furry catkins are young in early spring. These species include: Goat willow or goat sallow, a small tree native to northern Europe and northwest Asia. Before the male catkins of these species come into full flower they are covered in fine, greyish fur, leading to a fancied likeness to tiny cats, also known as “pussies”. The catkins appear long before the leaves, and are one of the earliest signs of spring.” To read more click here

Lovely. I can feel the beautiful texture of their fur. Brings back days camping as a youth.

I’d love to see some of them or forsythia, but it’s way too early and winter isn’t done with us yet. Soon……..I hope. 🙂

This time of year pussy willow makes a showing around here. Then comes the coltsfoot and crocus. It’s supposed to be in the 50s tomorrow so I’m hoping to get out and start hunting for them. 🙂

The ‘pussy willow’ is also a favourite of florists. A simple addition to any arrangement.
