“The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), also known as the whitetail, is a medium-sized deer native to the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and South America as far south as Peru and Bolivia. It has also been introduced to New Zealand, Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Bahamas, Lesser Antilles, and some countries in Europe, such as Finland, the Czech Republic, and Serbia. In the Americas, it is the most widely distributed wild ungulate.” (To read more about white-tailed deer click here)

They spook pretty easily so you are right to feel that way. 😉

except for the fawns … they’re curious and that makes them bold 🙂

That’s true! But mom is usually close by to remind them that curiosity is not always a good thing. Especially when it come to humans. 😉

understandable — she wouldn’t be a mom if she weren’t protective! 🙂
except for Mallard moms … we’re so used to seeing their youngsters dash up to us in hopes of food, while she hangs back. 😀

I want to stroke that fur! Hmmmm…. do deers have fur or hair?

I think it’s called hair like it is with horses. I agree – the fawn has a beautiful coat of hair. I love the markings too. 🙂

White-tailed ? I wonder why not white-spotted ? Maybe all deer are spotted ? – whose nose ?
Whatever, it’s a super shot, Jackie !

It’s spotted because it is a young deer (you know, like Bambi) which I mentioned in the caption. The name is derived from the underside of their tail which as you can see is white. 😀

Such a beautiful and graceful animal. Sometimes we get to see them near the mountains here, and of course they are widely hunted. You got a great picture.
